Icy road contributes to fatal car accident

By GREG MOORE
Express Staff Writer

A Ketchum man died Friday following a car accident on Highway 75 at the southern end of Ketchum.

Daniel Juarez-Garcia, 32, was pronounced dead at 11:34 a.m. at Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise.

According to Ketchum Police Chief Cal Nevland, the accident occurred near the Mountain View Grocery shortly after 7 a.m. when a southbound 1992 Eagle Talon hatchback in which Juarez-Garcia was a passenger slid sideways on the icy road into the northbound lane. The driver of one oncoming vehicle managed to swerve around it, but the second vehicle, a 2001 Toyota 4 Runner driven by Hailey resident Duncan Morton III, hit the Eagle on the passenger side door.

After Ketchum Fire Department members extricated Juarez-Garcia from the car, he was life-flighted to Saint Al’s. Morton and the driver of the Eagle, Garcia’s brother, Gilberto Juarez-Garcia, were treated and released at St. Luke’s Wood River Medical Center.

Nevland said no charges have yet been filed against Gilberto Juarez-Garcia.
