Wood River wins home opener against Wendell

Hoop screams

By JODY ZARKOS

Talk about starting off on the right foot.

Wood River’s home opener was a successful one. The Wolverines knocked off the Wendell Trojans 69-22 in Hailey Friday.

Senior Laurel Williams drives for the hoop against Wendell Friday night. The Wolverines won the game, 69-22.

"I am very satisfied with the start we had," coach Brent Carnduff said. "The girls showed a lot of intensity. They made a lot of good decisions and that usually doesn’t happen in the first game."

Wood River’s top scorer in the last two seasons, Laurel Williams, looked to make it three years in a row with a 24-point performance. Williams sunk four three-pointers and was 4-for-5 from the field and 4-for-5 from the free throw line.

Senior center Kristine Hilt chipped in 21 points. Also finding the bottom of the bucket were Kelly Haisley with 8 points. Natalie Green scored 7, Jessica King 4, Amanda Engel 2, Emily Smith 2 and Tara Rushton 1.

"All the girls came out and played well," Carnduff said. "They were very aggressive and played hard."

Wood River outscored Wendell 14-0 in the first quarter and held a 32-11 advantage at half-time.

"It’s a huge number of points. We even made some adjustments after we got ahead, but everything fell," Carnduff said.

Last season, the most points the Wolverines scored in a game were 53 in a loss to Valley.

Wood River (1-0) will play back-to-back non-conference games on the road, traveling to Carey Thursday and Valley of Hazleton Friday. The Wolverines are home to the Carey Panthers on Tuesday, Nov. 20.
