Corbett captures Pro Sweeps on home course

Winner in $16,023 Sun Valley Pro-Am


Sun Valley Golf Course head professional Doyle Corbett showed the other 27 pros how to play the par-72, 6,846-yard Sun Valley course during a big tournament last week.

Corbett (66-71 for 7-under-par 137) won Pro Sweeps of the $16,023 Sun Valley Pro-Am golf tourney played Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 1-2 at the resort. A total 28 pros and 84 amateurs competed over two days.

After his tremendous 66 on the first day, Corbett ($760) cruised home for a 3-stroke victory over defending Sun Valley Pro Sweeps champ Jeff Thomsen of Indian Lakes GC, Boise (72-68 for 140, $633).

Corbett also collected $550 for winning Senior Sweeps over Valley Club teaching pro Tommy Sanderson (74-74 for 4-over-par 148). Sanderson earned $367, plus another $151 for placing sixth in the overall Pro Sweeps division.

Sun Valley assistant pro Art Kerrick captained a foursome that pocketed $270 each for placing second among 28 Pro-Am teams. Kerrick and Woody Gardiner, Scott Winegan and Jeff Wong shot 125-132 for 257, three strokes behind.

The winning Pro-Am squad at 129-125 for 254 featured Cherry Lane GC (Meridian) pro Tad Holloway plus three amateurs from Spurwing in Meridian—Kevin Denison, Mike Taylor and Doug Oates.

In Amateur Sweeps, local golfers took home plenty of prizes during the Snake River Chapter PGA tour stop.

Tim Jeneson (76-78 for 154-138, $270) captured first in First Flight net. Second Flight net winner was Jeff Wong (78-82 for 160-136, $270).

Local Pro-Am teams: 3—Lance Rieber (Warm Springs, Boise) with Chuck Christopher and Bill Mason of Sun Valley, and Jim Milam of Idaho Falls (260, $197 each). 4—Doyle Corbett (SV) with Wally Huffman, Joe Yarborough and John Demetre (261, $131 each).

7 (tie)—Jeff Thomsen (Indian Lakes) with SV golfers Brian Saksa, Mansel Rogers and Brian Smith (263, $34 each). 7 (tie)—Brett Cordingley (Teton Lakes, Rexburg) with SV amateurs Duane Allen, Niel Erickson and Rex Erickson (263, $34).
