Martinez tabbed as Wood River AD

New athletic director

Ron Martinez, 48, has been approved by the Blaine County School District Board of Trustees as the new athletic director at Wood River High School in Hailey.

Martinez, who replaces Charley Miller, will be in charge of all athletics and activities for Wood River’s top four grades. In addition, he will evaluate teachers.

"I’m looking forward to it," said Martinez, offered the job in June and approved by the board July 10. "Hopefully I can be an asset to coaches and get our program to the point where it is competitive when we go up against bigger schools."

A school teacher for 25 years, Martinez has taught mathematics while coaching cross country and boys’ track at Wood River High School for the past three years.

Martinez graduated from Idaho State University in Pocatello in 1976. He taught and coached in Idaho Falls, Jackson Hole and South Dakota before spending 10 years teaching in Alaska.

He and his wife, Angela, live in Hailey with son Juan, 9, and daughter Kaitana, 7.
