Harrison captures
Bogus Bomber
Mexia fastest in
downhill
Ketchum’s
Dave Harrison blew away the Pro/Semi Pro men’s field and won Saturday’s
21-mile Bogus Bomber mountain bike race by six minutes over his closest
rival.
Setting an
incredible pace with a first lap of 53:10 for 10.5 miles, Harrison
(1.48:20) actually seemed to get stronger on the second lap and won by
6:11 over Mike Vine of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.
Ketchum’s
Whitney Albright (1.59:55) was sixth. The women’s winner over 21 miles
was Brooke Blackwelder of Boise (2.16:50) by nearly eight minutes over
Mary Ann Fleckenstein of Boise (2.24:10).
Conquering
a vicious 1.1-mile downhill Bomber course Sunday was pro winner Moses
Mexia of Hailey (2:09.99). It featured numerous rock gardens, drop-offs,
log jumps, off-camber turns and a near-cliff drop to the finish line.
Last
weekend’s 10th annual Bogus Bomber was the seventh stop on the 2001 Wild
Rockies "Unplugged" Mountain Bike Series tour. The weekend had a
good turnout of 337 racers, an increase of 70 from 2000.
Others
winning their age classes among 16 Wood River Valley cross-country racers
at Bogus Basin were Dede Draper (2.19:19 for 10.5 miles) and Zach Thornton
(5:55 in the short Trailblackers beginner race).
The next
series event is the Pomerelle Pounder Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 18-19 on a
brand new course at Pomerelle Ski Resort south of Burley.
