Folske, Strickland capture triathlon

Field nearly doubles for 18-miler

The field nearly doubled compared to last year for the Sun Valley Sprint Triathlon staged Saturday and Sunday, July 7-8 in Sun Valley.

Sunday’s top three men’s overall finishers in the Sprint Triathlon, from left, were third-place Bill Nurge (1.12:32), winner Keith Folske of Boise (1.12:01) and runner-up Grant Folske of Boise (1.12:23). Express photo by Willy Cook

Organizer Bill Cantrell said the community really came forward to pay their respects to Dick Pomeroy by participating in the 16th annual 18-miler.

Pomeroy, longtime swim coach at the Sun Valley Athletic Club, primary sponsor of the triathlon, died last Monday after a short illness.

Cantrell said, "Part of the reason we brought the race back was to hold a benefit for Dick, and then he died last Monday. Everyone in the community really came forward. Hopefully we’ll continue holding the race."

Boise-based brothers Keith Folske (1.12:01) and Grant Folske (1.12:23) led the 40 male individuals, just ahead of Ketchum’s Bill Nurge (1.12:32).

Angela Strickland of Ketchum (1.24:05) set the pace for the 31 female individuals.

Clocking the best team time for the second straight year were swimmer Dave McBryant, bicyclist Richard Feldman and runner Kitty Marcroft (1.10:28). There were 14 teams in all.

The 0.5-mile swimming portion of the two-day triathlon was held Saturday evening. On Sunday, the 13.2-mile bicycle ride and 4.3-mile run were staged at Trail Creek Cabin.

There were 114 athletes including 72 individuals and 42 others on the 14 teams. That was an increase over last year, when there were 67 athletes including 37 individuals.

Time improvements over last year were shown by individual finishers Pete McDonald 6:07, Michael Felton 5:54, Nate Thomas 4:25 and Eva Hague 4:18.

Splits will be available this week at Sun Valley Athletic Club.
