State rodeo on
horizon for Fifth District hands
District finals
completed at Gooding
Wood River rodeo
club members Ashley Smith and Natalia Ferris (girls’ cutting) and Tara
Rushton (queen, barrel racing) have qualified for state rodeo
competition.
After a full
spring schedule of Fifth District High School rodeos, they were among
the top six finishers in the season standings of their events. So they
earned trips to state rodeo June 18-23 in Pocatello.
In a very close
race, Smith and Ferris finished 1-2 in the girls’ cutting standings.
Rushton, tied for sixth in barrel racing for the season, also won the
Fifth District queen contest ahead of Jerome’s Rachel Cox.
The final Fifth
District standings were determined at the district finals May 24-26 in
Gooding.
Winning the season
all-around cowboy and cowgirl titles were Dan Webb of Wendell (182
points), with Austin Turner (164) of Gooding second, and Italy Jo Eames
of Gooding (331), with Amy Walker of Glenns Ferry (328.5) a close
second.
High-point rookies
were Sam Bray of Bliss (37 points) and Eames (331).
At the Gooding
district finals, Walker edged Eames 54-51 for all-around girls’ honors
at that rodeo and Webb slipped past Turner 40-34.
In go-rounds at
the Gooding district finals, Ashley Smith made the top six in barrel
racing and polebending, and Rushton clocked a fourth-place barrel racing
time.
Meanwhile, in
another season-ending honor on the circuit, the Glambia scholarships
given for the highest grade-point averages combined with the top
all-around Fifth District rodeo points went to Austin Turner and Italy
Jo Eames.
