Sunsets second in Vancouver hockey tournament

It didn’t take long for the Sun Valley Sunsets to get their hockey legs back.

Idle for more than two months, the Sunsets made it all the way to the championship game of the third annual Pacific Northwest Women’s Invitational Hockey Tournament at Vancouver, B.C. Canada.

Playing six games in roughly 43 hours over Memorial Day weekend, the Sunsets reeled off five consecutive victories to qualify for the championship contest.

In the final, Sun Valley squared off against Ms. Conduct, a select team from California.

Ms. Conduct scored 36 seconds into the game and then the two teams locked horns in a scoreless battle.

Team Most Valuable Player Georgia Hutchinson converted a sweet pass from center Wendy Hall to equalize in the third period. A little more than three minutes later California netted the game-winner.

Still, after going 0-5 in the top-flight tournament the previous year, the Sunsets came home happy.

"It was a lot of fun. A great tournament," wing Julie Bell remarked.

Sun Valley recorded wins of 1-0, 2-0, 3-1, 3-1 and 1-0 over teams from Oregon and Canada. Here’s a summary of the Sunsets weekend scoring:

·  Points—Tizz Miller 2 goals/3 assists, Georgia Hutchinson 3/1, Lucy O’Connell 3/0, Wendy Hall 2/1, Sheila Naghsh 0/2, Jini Griffith 0/2, Julie Bell 0/2, Kris Miller 0/2, Christine Gould 1/0, Edith Iler 0/1, Sarah Benson 0/1 and Larsen Peterson.

Goalie Karen Morrison recorded three shutouts and received two game MVP nods. Other MVP’s were Julie Bell, Christine Gould, Georgia Hutchinson and Sheila Naghsh.
