Newspaper sweeps awards
Express is big Press Club winner for 2000
It was a tidal wave.
The Idaho Mountain Express of Ketchum took 52 of
100 awards for weekly newspapers in the Idaho Press Clubs annual
newspaper contest.
The awards were announced Saturday.
The Express brought home the coveted Sweepstakes
Award for the newspaper that racks up the most awards. The Express
also took second in General Excellence.
Second in the winners circle, with 16 awards, was
the Boise Weekly.
The Wood River Journal of Hailey won eight
awards, including a first for General Excellence. The St. Maries Gazette
Record also received eight awards, followed by McCalls Star News
with four, and the Priest River Times, The Idaho Business Review
and the Adams County Record with one each.
Express publisher Pam Morris said, "Were
really, really proud of the newspaper staff members. They turn in great
performances week in and week out to give the Wood River Valley a
consistently great newspaper."
The Express swept four of 29 competition
categories.
Sportswriters Jeff Cordes and Jody Zarkos grabbed all
three awards in Sports News.
Peter Boltz joined Zarkos to slam-dunk the Sports
Features writing category.
Express designer Gavin McNeil took the only two
awards given for graphic design, while Tony Barriatua and Wendy Hall
dominated the page design category.
Reporters Kevin Wiser, Greg Stahl and Travis Purser
nailed every spot in Light Features.
Express Reporter Travis Purser made waves with
11 newspaper writing awards and two magazine writing awards for his work
in the Sun Valley Guide. His awards tally was unsurpassed by any
other reporter in Idaho.
Express reporter Peter Boltz grabbed second
place honors as Rookie of the Year.
Gold medal work was turned in for the Express by
David Seelig in sports photography, Greg Stahl in environmental reporting
and Kevin Wiser in serious feature writing.

Adair for headline writing, and to Scott Sanders for feature photography.

Cordes Greg Moore, Ron Soble, Pam Morris, Pat Murphy, Lan Trevillian,
David Seelig, Adam Tanous, Wendy Hall and Kevin Wiser.
