2001 Blaine County Rec District Youth Programs


Offered by the Blaine County Recreation District at several locations. If you have any questions concerning any part of the program, contact 788-2117 or, when the pool opens, 788-2144 (pool) weekdays. The Rec District's spring and summer program guide is available at the Rec District office at 308 North Main in Hailey, at the Sun Valley/Ketchum Chamber of Commerce office and some stores.

WOOD RIVER DOLPHINS SWIM TEAM

At Blaine County Aquatic Center, Hailey. To participate on swim team, children must be able to swim one length of the pool, which is 25 yards.

Days—Mondays through Fridays, plus six swim meets.

Dates—May 30-Aug. 4.

Pre-season workouts—On May 30, June 4, June 6 and June 8 (on a Monday, Wednesday, Friday schedule). From 3:30-4:30 p.m. for ages 7-10, and 4:30-5:30 p.m. for ages 11-18.

Regular-season workouts (starting June 11)—From 7:30-8:30 a.m. for ages 11-18, and 8:30-9:30 a.m. for ages 7-10.

Parents meeting—Thursday, May 24 from 6-7 p.m. at the Hailey pool.

Swim marathon—Will be held, date and time to be announced, as the chief fund-raising activity for the team.

Fee—$160 per person includes training, summer pool pass and t-shirt (doesn't include team swim suit). Payment plans and discounts are available to families with more than one child on swim team. Final payments are due before the Sagebrush League championship meet.

Scholarships—Are available.

Practices for younger kids—Offered again is a two-day-a-week practice schedule for 5- and 6-year-olds who can swim the length of the pool. Workouts are June 11 through July 26, from 8:30-9:30 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Cost $85 includes training, summer pool pass, t-shirt and swim meets. You must be able to swim the length of the pool.


GUS & GOLDIE SWIM SCHOOL

Six sessions at Blaine County Aquatic Center, Hailey. Class and private lessons are scheduled at all ability levels.

Days—Mondays through Thursdays.

Sessions—#1 session June 11-21 (Carey bus offered); #2 session June 25-July 6 (Bellevue bus offered); #3 session July 9-19 (Ketchum/Sun Valley bus offered); #4 session July 23-Aug. 2 (no bus offered); #5 session Aug. 6-16 (no bus offered); and Aug. 21-31 (no bus offered). Sessions include eight 30-minute lessons.

Times—10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each day.

Class levels—From "Mommy, Daddy and Me," (6 months to 3 years) and Guppies (age 3 only) to Beginner, Advanced Beginner, Intermediate and Swimmer. Children are placed based on age and skill level.

Busing—Free round-trip busing is available at selected sessions. See the list above, in "Sessions." Call 788-2144 for details.

Fee—$37.50 per person for each session. You will not be registered until the fee is paid.

Registration—Starts Monday, May 21 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Aquatic Center (788-2144). Class sizes are limited. First-come, first-served. Please register early! But remember, the Aquatic Center won’t begin accepting registrations until May 21.

Scholarships—To qualified individuals, the Atkinson family generously provides scholarships—$20 per child for each session which reduces the cost to $17.50 per child. Ask for information and applications.


JUNIOR LIFEGUARD PROGRAM

Teaching introductory lifeguarding skills, public relations and sun cancer information. If you graduate as a Junior Lifeguard you will have an opportunity to "Shadow Guard," as a professional lifeguard at the Aquatic Center.

Days—Mondays through Thursdays.

Session—July 9-19 (#3 Swim School session).

Times—11:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.

Age requirement—12 years or older.

Fee—$40 includes Junior Lifeguard t-shirt.


FREE OPEN SWIM DAY

When—Monday, May 28. Celebrate Memorial Day at the Aquatic Center.

Times—12 noon to 5 p.m.

Eligibility—Boys and girls in grades 1-8.

Sponsored by—A school recess activity sponsored by Lallman, Feltman, Peterson & Co., P.A.


DANCE AND THE CREATIVE ARTS

Offered through the Footlight Dance Centre (726-3664 ext. 16) and Sun Valley Athletic Club. Register by June 2. Enrollment is limited.

Intensive five-day "Dance in the Mountains" workshop featuring special guest artists is offered June 15-21.

The workshop at Sun Valley Athletic Club in Ketchum is open to ages 12-to-adult, plus a special introductory workshop for children 10-12. Classes in ballet, pilates conditioning, modern, jazz and hip hop. Contact Hilarie Neely at the Sun Valley Athletic Club 726-3664 extension 16.

An Introductory Dance Camp for ages 7-9 (kids entering grades 2-4) features dance, theater games and other dance activities. It takes place Monday through Friday, June 25-29 from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Sun Valley Athletic Club studio. Cost $130 ($105 for SVAC members). Register by June 15. Call Neely.

Other Footlight/SVAC studio summer programs include Acting for Stage & Film for grades 6-8 June 25-29; Etiquette/Finishing & Ballroom Workshop with Gretchen Palmer for grades 6-8 July 31-Aug. 10; and Ballet in August with Karen Shanley from Los Angeles Aug. 22-24, for advanced students.


BASKETBALL CAMP

Days, dates—Monday through Thursday, May 21-24.

Times—3:30-6 p.m. for grades 3-7; and 6-8 p.m. for grades 8-11.

Location—Wood River High School gym, Hailey.

Eligibility—All boys and girls in grades 3-11. All skill levels welcome.

Be sure to bring—Sneakers and water bottle.

Fee—$40 per person ($35 in advance), with proceeds benefiting the high school basketball program.

Registration—On the first day, May 21. Sign-up sheets are also available at all schools and you can pre-register at the reduced fee through May 18.

Instructors—Wood River High School boys' basketball coach Jeff Larson and his staff.


3-ON-3 BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT

Competition in different age groups, sponsored by the Rec District and Donnelley Sports of Twin Falls.

Days—Friday and Saturday, Aug. 17-18.

Time—Games begin each day at 10:30 a.m.

Location—Wood River Middle School outdoor basketball courts, Hailey.

Register—At the site Aug. 17 at 9:30 a.m.

Eligibility—Boys and girls ages 9-18.

Director—Eric Anderson, 788-2117 extension 12.


SPECIAL SUMMER EVENTS


ROARING SPRINGS WATER PARK

One-day water adventure to Roaring Springs, a new 15-acre water park in Boise. Transportation provided.

Day—Wednesday, Aug. 1.

Times—8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Location—Traveling to the Treasure Valley.

Eligibility—Boys and girls grades 4-8.

Transportation—Vans leave Hemingway Elementary School in Ketchum at 8 a.m. and from Hailey Elementary School at 8:30 a.m. They return to Hailey Elementary at 7:30 p.m. and to Hemingway at 8 p.m.

Entry fee—$30 per person includes transportation, supervision and admission.

Registration—Starts July 16. First-come, first-served. Limited to the first 40.

Sponsored by—Lallman, Feltman, Peterson & Co., P.A.


ARTS IN THE PARK

Six weeks of outdoor art projects for little boys and girls. Projects include making masks and drawing.

Days—Thursday mornings.

Dates—Six weeks; June 14, 21 and 28; July 5, 12 and 19.

Times—From 10-11:30 a.m.

Location—At Hailey's Hop Porter Park.

Eligibility—Open to boys and girls ages 4-6, and their parents.

Fee—$36 per person includes six weeks of instruction including supplies. Or $6 per class.

Pre-registration—Is important to make the program work. Do so by June 7 at the Rec District office in Hailey.


PRE-SEASON SOCCER CAMP

Days—Monday through Thursday.

Dates—Aug. 20-23.

Times—From 10-11:30 a.m. for grades 1-3; from 1-2:30 p.m. for grades 4-6.

Location—At Nelson Field in Hailey (Hailey Elementary fields).

Fee—$15 per person.
