Create a miracle
In the middle of the holiday rush, it’s
easy to forget that giving should extend beyond immediate families and
friends. It’s also easy to forget that a little goes a long way.
Ten dollars isn’t much these days, but
ten dollars multiplied a hundred times is $1,000, multiplied 1,000 times
it’s $10,000. It’s simple math and serious money. Old Mr. Scrooge of
"A Christmas Carol" fame knew the concept well.
It’s a common misconception that people
must have millions in the bank before their money can make a difference.
The truth is that deserving charities and non-profits need large and small
donations. In fact, they can’t live without both—just ask any
bell-ringing street corner Santa in any big city.
Organizations often need donations of time,
as well. In this era of two-career parents, volunteers are in short
supply.
If there’s an interest, there’s
probably a non-profit that promotes it. Non-profit organizations do
everything from saving endangered wildlife to housing the homeless and
educating disadvantaged kids. They bring the nation visual and performing
arts that would otherwise be confined to big-city audiences. Globally,
they sow peace wherever they go.
Charities and non-profits bring hope to the
people and communities they touch. They do what government and business
can’t, or won’t.
The Wood River Valley is home to more than
80 non-profit organizations that need money and volunteers.
It’s a good time to curl up with a cup of
cocoa, write a few checks and fill a few envelopes for your favorite
groups. Or, promise to donate some time for them next year.
The payoff? Knowing that you helped create
a miracle in someone’s life.
