Scribner tops Warm Springs tennis players

At Fourth of July holiday weekend tournament

Warm Springs Tennis Club head pro Mark Scribner had himself a big holiday weekend July 1-4 during the 14th annual Warm Springs Open.

Scribner rallied to capture men’s Open singles and added men’s Open doubles and mixed doubles titles to his collection at the end of the four-day Independence Day tournament.

"He’s the man," said fellow Warm Springs tennis pro David Perry about Scribner. And Perry knew, firsthand.

In the men’s Open singles semi-finals, Scribner dropped a first-set tiebreaker to defending men’s singles champ Perry and then used a strong serving game to outlast his top-seeded younger rival 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-3.

Perry said, "In the second set I broke Mark the first game. But I played a loose game at 1-0 and, after that I lost my focus. Mark broke me early in the third set and served huge the rest of the match."

Fourth-seeded Scribner kept his focus and toppled #3-seeded Sun Valley Tennis Club pro Kie Foreman 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 in the championship match. Foreman had beaten #2-seeded Kurt Haggstrom 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 in another exciting semi-final.

Scribner teamed with longtime doubles partner Haggstrom to win men’s Open doubles. It was their sixth Warm Springs Open doubles championships in seven years.

And, in a fitting touch, Scribner and Lauren Drew—the Community School junior-to-be he has coached to two straight Idaho Class B prep girls’ singles titles—got together for the mixed Open doubles triumph.

The women’s Open singles winner was Ashley Dille of Twin Falls, the 2000 Idaho State Class A girls’ singles champion. Second place went to Britt Palmedo of Sun Valley.

A total 45 singles entries plus 44 doubles teams competed July 1-4 in 15 classes on the Ketchum creekside courts. Sponsoring the holiday tournament was Sturtevants of Ketchum.

Next up at Warm Springs, with a similar format, is the Labor Day Open Sept. 1-4. All entries must be received by Aug. 29. Besides Open classes, women’s classes will range from 3.0-5.0, men’s from 3.5 to 5.0.
