Amateurs score well at Sun Valley Pro-Am

128 golfers compete in $18,171 tourney


Sun Valley-area golfers nearly swept the gross and net Amateur Sweeps divisions at the conclusion of the two-day, $18,171 Sun Valley Pro-Am golf tournament May 24-25.

Walter Littenberg, James Morley, Mansel Rogers, Rory Mitchell and Greg Mitchell earned first-place winnings in their flights during the Snake River Chapter PGA tour stop. A total 32 pros and 96 amateurs competed.

And The Valley Club’s Tommy Sanderson (76-73 for 5-over-par 149 and $508) won Senior Sweeps for his two tours of the par-72, 6,674-yard Sun Valley Golf Course. Sanderson tied for seventh-place overall, eight strokes off the best pro score.

Winning Pro Sweeps was Jeff Thomsen of Boise’s Indian Lakes (68-73 for 1-under-par 141 and $798). His first-round score of 4-under-par 68 was the tournament best and one of only five sub-par rounds.

Pro Sweeps runner-up was John Schoonover of Boise’s Divotz Discount Golf and Driving Range (71-72 for 143, $606). In third was Kevin Burton (72-72 for 144 and $443).

Tying for first place among Pro-Am teams and earning $342 each were the foursome captained by Tad Holloway of Cherry Lane Golf Club in Meridian, and Schoonover’s squad.

Holloway and amateurs Mike Taylor, Kevin Denison and Dennis McCracken shot 130-124 for 254, while Schoonover with partners Mansel Rogers, James Morley and Harvey Knoll carded 125-129 for 254.

Sun Valley assistant pro Nick Holtzmaster captained the third-place team with Gary Grimes, Walter Littenberg and Rory Mitchell. They shot 124-132 for 256 and won $210 each.

Pro-Am teams: 8 (tie)—John Weekes (Twin Falls Municipal) with Tim Jeneson, Brian Saksa and Mint Vitale 132-132 for 264 and $42 each.

Others: Tommy Sanderson (Valley Club) with Mike Murphy, Charlie Wister and Louie Mallane 269; Doyle Corbett (Sun Valley) with Tim Appleton, Joe Yarborough and Wally Huffman 272; Scott Syms (Valley Club) with John Galgano, Kevin Cincotta and Rich Fabiano 274; Steve Rust (Bigwood) with John Whisler, Dave Penn and Rory Mitchell 281.

Senior Sweeps: 2 (tie)—Doyle Corbett 75-77 for 152 and John Weekes 74-78 for 152, each $169.

First flight, gross: 1—Walter Littenberg 75-73 for 148 and $289. 2—Gary Grimes 72-80 for 152 and $222. 8—Jim Greenwood 159 for $51. 9—Brian Saksa 161 for $23.

First flight, net: 1 (tie)—James Morley 78-75 for 153-141 and $157. 3—Kevin Cincotta 85-77 for 162-146 and $154. 5—Charlie Wister 147 for $100. 7—Dick Coleman 149 for $60.

Second flight, gross: 1—Mansel Rogers 77-78 for 155 and $157. 3—Tim Appleton 78-81 for 159 and $176. Second flight, net: 1—Rory Mitchell 78-79 for 157-137 and $289. 2—Eric Willis 80-80 for 160-140 and $169. 6—Rich Fabiano 146 for $80. 9—John Galgano 151 for $46.

In other scores: Wally Huffman shot 87-91 for 178-158; Joe Yarborough carded a first-round 84; and Chuck Ferries had a second-round 87.

Third flight, gross: 1—Greg Mitchell 84-87 for 171 and $303. 3—John Demetre 179 for $167. 8—Louie Mallane 188 for $59. Third flight, net: 6—John Whisler 148 for $79.
