High school band raffles off a car

Money for trip to Nevada

Some lucky person is going to drive away with a new car, on Friday, Feb. 11 during the final Wood River High School home boys’ basketball game of the 1999-2000 season.

The Wood River High School music department is currently selling raffle tickets at $10 each. If you buy one, your name is entered in the drawing for a 2000 Ford Focus vehicle.

Drawing for the big prize, worth roughly about $12,000, will be held during halftime of the Wood River boys’ varsity basketball "Senior Night" game against Declo on Feb. 11 at the high school gym in Hailey.

High school music director Bart Bailey said his students are selling the raffle tickets to first purchase the vehicle, and then use whatever extra money is raised to pay for a trip to Las Vegas, Nev. in late March.

Traveling March 24-27 on three Sun Valley Stages buses will be about 115 Wood River band and choir students, plus 23 chaperones including Bailey and his wife, Wood River Middle School music director Holly Bailey.

They are going to Las Vegas to compete in an Adjudication Invitational Festival where their talents will be evaluated by professionals, Bart Bailey said.

Plans call for the group to leave Hailey on the morning of Friday, March 24 and arrive in Las Vegas that evening. They’ll compete Saturday, do some touring around and visit the Fine Arts Academy operated by the Las Vegas School District.

They’ll have some fun Sunday, and return to Hailey on Monday, March 27.

Bailey said, "This has turned into a big project.

"We were barnstorming one day in band class when Luke Cordingley came up with the idea of having a car raffle to raise money.

"We’ll be buying the car from Sawtooth Auto Sales. They’ll put a snowboard/ski rack on it, and the school district will pay for our transportation to Las Vegas."

About the sale of raffle tickets, Bailey said he’d like to make considerably more than the $12,000 cost of the car and earmark the rest of the sales toward the group’s trip.

Raffle tickets are currently on sale from Wood River music students, at Sawtooth Auto Sales in Hailey, F-Stop Camera & Video in Ketchum, and during Wolverine girls’ and boys’ basketball games.

And, if you buy 10 tickets, you get an extra ticket, free.
