Our holiday
Even as things change, so they remain the same. The
following editorial appeared in 1974.
If it can be said that any one national holiday is celebrated with
particular warmth by the people of this valley, it must be Thanksgiving. The nation as a
whole has much to be thankful for, despite the nagging political and economic problems
which continue to batter away at us.
We in this valley need only look around us to realize how thankful we
should be. Our forefathers took this time to pause and reflect on the freshly reaped
harvest now in the barns or larders. Their hard summers work was done.
We too shall pause, gather in groups as families and friends, stuff
ourselves on turkey with all the trimmings, and gorge ourselves on a full day of football.
For shortly our hard winters work will begin.
Despite Mother Natures refusal to cooperate with the hard work
and efforts of so many people trying to get us off to an early winter season, we fear not.
It will snow soon enough and with it will come the hordes of people who put the food on
our tables.
And with the season comes the blinding acceleration in pace that leaves
little time for the casual gatherings of friends. Christmas for so many here is just
another work day. But for now, let us gather, let us party, and let us relax; but let us
be thankful.
