Montgomery finishes Ironman Canada
741st overall in 140-mile race
Ketchum chiropractor Tom Montgomery needed medical
attention in the marathon run and never made it to the finish line of last years
Subaru Ironman Canada triathlon.
On Sunday, Montgomery returned to Penticton, B.C., Canada and finished
what he started in the challenging 140.6-mile triathlon featuring a 2.4-mile swim,
112-bicycle ride and 26.2-mile run.
Montgomery placed 741st overall of 1,652 finishersand 35th of 140
athletes in the mens 45-49 age classwith a finishing time of 12 hours, 20
minutes and 13 seconds.
His splits were 1.16:05 swim, 5.42:51 bike and 5.08:53 run. The total
was a little behind the 11.31:50 finishing time Montgomery recorded in the same event in
1997but he finished in 1999.
So did professional triathlete Chuckie Veylupek of Liberty Lake, Wash.,
who improved 23:06 over his runner-up time of 1998 and won Sundays event in 8.49:10.
The repeat womens winner by a full 37 minutes was Lori Bowden of
Victoria, B.C., Canada, 13th overall in 9.14:03.
Fitness consultant Liza Rachetto of Boise was 3rd in the womens
25-29 class in 10.59:32, good for 269th overall. And student Tom Liby of Boise finished
35th overall and 2nd in mens 25-29 in 9.45:08.
Both Rachetto and Liby are past winners of the Sun Valley Sprint
Triathlon.
