Perry, Palmedo capture Warm Springs singlesIndependence Day tennis tourneyJeromes David Perry survived a tough semi-final match and advanced to capture the mens Open singles title of the 26th annual Fourth of July tennis tournament at Warm Springs Tennis Club Monday. A total 79 singles entries plus 72 doubles teams competed Saturday through Monday in 23 classes on the Ketchum creekside courts. Providing gift certificates were sponsors Sturtevants and Sushi on Second. Perry outlasted Sun Valley Tennis pro Kie Foreman 7-6 (8-6), 4-6, 6-3 in the semi-final. Avenging a split-set semi-final loss in last years Independence Day tourney, Perry ($200) then defeated Warm Springs pro Kurt Haggstrom ($100) 6-2, 6-2 in the title match. Defending champion Haggstrom had beaten Steven Serratore of Los Angeles in the semi-final to advance. Womens Open singles winner was Britt Palmedo 6-0, 6-0 over reigning Idaho Class B girls singles champion Lauren Drew. Palmedo lost only two games in her three tournament matches. Drew, meanwhile, was a 6-4, 6-2 winner in each of her preliminaries. Semi-finalists in womens Open were Colleen Enright and Laura Guth. Other championship match results and selected semi-final outcomes from the Warm Springs holiday tournament, which saw a substantial increase in participants and classes over 1998: Singles Mens 5.0Chad Vaughn of Boise 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 over Mike Harvey of Boise. In the semi-finals, Vaughn prevailed 6-3, 6-4 over Scott Gableman and Harvey made the final 6-3, 6-3 over Robert Sterk. Mens 4.5Brent Bungard 6-1, 6-3 over John Sofro. Earlier in the tournament, Bungard defeated Mark Pynn 6-2, 6-7, 6-4 and Dave Clark 6-3, 6-4. Mens 4.0Dean Rutherford 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 over Phil Ellis. Mens 3.5Mike Curry of Boise 6-4, 6-4 over Aaron Merzlock. Merzlock had a tough semi-final, beating Cory Mecham 6-7, 7-6, 7-6 (7-5). Mens 3.0Dave Massie 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 over Tom Lyda. Womens 4.5Susan Silva 7-5, 7-5 over Michelle Rutherford. Womens 4.0Sandy Martin 6-2, 6-1 over Chiyo Parten. Womens 3.5Jill Brennan 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 over Patricia Morris. Womens 3.0Judy Strand of Boise 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 over Irene Asher. In the semi-finals, Strand won 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 over Renee Parry while Asher survived 1-6, 6-2, 6-1 over Gwen Thornfeldt. Doubles Mens OpenKurt Haggstrom and David Perry by default over Kie Foreman and Steven Serratore. In the semi-finals, Haggstrom and Perry escaped with a 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) victory over Brian Johnson and Mike Machado. Mens 5.0Chad Vaughn and Mike Harvey of Boise 6-7, 6-4, 6-1 over Jeff Roth and David Carter. The six-team 5.0 doubles division was very competitive. In the semi-finals, eventual champions Vaughn and Harvey won 6-3, 5-7, 6-1 over Robert Sterk and Michael Caven, while Roth and Carter were 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 winners over Brian Johnson and Eric Thornfeldt of Boise. Sterk and Cavens quarterfinal triumph went to three tiebreakers. They won 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (7-3), 7-6 (7-5) over George Maurtua and Scott Gableman. Mens 4.0Frank Ward and Todd Bowen won three matches in straight sets including their 6-2, 6-4 title match victory over Dean Rutherford and Phil Ellis. Mens 3.5Cory Mecham and Dustin Mecham 6-2, 6-4 over James Gruber and Bruce Bergquist. Womens OpenBritt Palmedo and Brittain Palmedo 6-0, 6-1 over Whitney Palmedo and Colleen Enright. In the semis, it was Whitney Palmedo and Enright 6-7, 7-5, 6-2 over Laura Guth and Lindsay Burt. Womens 4.0Juli Jones Webb and Elizabeth Elroy 6-2, 6-3 over Alma Mills and Nancy Thomas. Womens 3.5Katharine Judd and Marlene Lehman over Janice Duncan and Paula Barovetto. Womens 3.0Cindy Carr and Leslie Cook 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 over Judy Strand and Ruth Fritz-Gableman. Mixed OpenAhren Hart and George Maurtua 6-1, 6-2 over Britt and Peter Palmedo. Mixed 4.5Lupe Betancur-Azbill and Ken Azbill of Boise 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 over Susan Silva and Ken Carr.
