Perry, Palmedo capture Warm Springs singles

Independence Day tennis tourney

Jerome’s David Perry survived a tough semi-final match and advanced to capture the men’s Open singles title of the 26th annual Fourth of July tennis tournament at Warm Springs Tennis Club Monday.

A total 79 singles entries plus 72 doubles teams competed Saturday through Monday in 23 classes on the Ketchum creekside courts. Providing gift certificates were sponsors Sturtevants and Sushi on Second.

Perry outlasted Sun Valley Tennis pro Kie Foreman 7-6 (8-6), 4-6, 6-3 in the semi-final. Avenging a split-set semi-final loss in last year’s Independence Day tourney, Perry ($200) then defeated Warm Springs pro Kurt Haggstrom ($100) 6-2, 6-2 in the title match.

Defending champion Haggstrom had beaten Steven Serratore of Los Angeles in the semi-final to advance.

Women’s Open singles winner was Britt Palmedo 6-0, 6-0 over reigning Idaho Class B girls’ singles champion Lauren Drew.

Palmedo lost only two games in her three tournament matches. Drew, meanwhile, was a 6-4, 6-2 winner in each of her preliminaries. Semi-finalists in women’s Open were Colleen Enright and Laura Guth.
