For the week of July 7, 1999  thru July 13, 1999

Great gift

The trail system that runs through and around the Wood River Valley is a marvel.

On Saturday, it’s going to become more marvelous when the first six-mile stretch of the Harriman Trail between Prairie Creek and Galena Lodge is dedicated.

When finished, the hardened trail will span 18 miles along the Big Wood River corridor. It will take summer bikers and hikers along one of the most beautiful paths in the world. Cross-country skiers will enjoy the spectacular solitude of the trail in winter.

Valley residents and visitors owe a debt of thanks to the Harriman Family Foundation, the Theresa Heinz Foundation and other local supporters who paid for construction of the trail on public land. They also owe a big thank-you to the U.S. Forest Service, which cooperated in trail construction within the Sawtooth National Recreation Area.

The trail will be a lot of fun and a boon to the area’s economy. It will make mountain bikers safer because they will not be forced to ride State Highway 75 to connect with other canyons. It will disperse hikers and visitors along the length of the Big Wood River and make the outdoor experience a little less congested.

What a great gift.
