Ketchum Fire Department members John Rathfon and Miles Canfield load Nhi Pham, a 10 year old Ketchum girl, into an ambulance following an accident on Ketchum's Main Street.

A 10-year-old girl probably escaped with only minor abrasions yesterday after being run over by a trailer while crossing Main Street in Ketchum on her bicycle.

According to Ketchum Police Chief Cal Nevland, Nhi Pham began riding across the street near the intersection of Fourth Avenue about noon, and tried to go behind a pickup truck towing an empty 300-gallon water tank. Nevland said the truck was moving slowly in heavy traffic but that Pham misjudged its progress and ran into its side.

Nevland said the trailer ran over Pham and pinned her beneath its wheel. He said the truck’s driver, Trent Nieffengger, a resident of Hailey, saw what was happening in his mirror and pulled ahead.

Nevland said Pham was transported to the Wood River Medical Center in Sun Valley where she was under evaluation yesterday afternoon. However, he said, she appeared to have no serious injuries. He added that she had been lucky the trailer had no water in it.

Nevland said Nieffengger apparently had no fault in the accident.

He also said his department is encouraging parents to tell their children to walk their bikes across Main Street and to do so in a crosswalk.
