Resort asks locals to slow down

Crowds and great conditions hit Baldy

Thus far in the ski season, Bald Mountain has remained fairly uncrowded, says Sun Valley Company public relations representative Jack Sibbach. But starting Friday, destination visitors will start arriving and local skiers and snowboarders will need to slow down.

This is not a threat, said Sibbach. "We’re only asking that locals don’t scare the guests by skiing fast in slow skiing areas. We have such great skiers on this mountain, they go fast and are in control. But that scares the guests."

Sun Valley has five "slow skiing" areas. They are on Mid and Lower Warm Springs, Upper and Lower College, all of Seattle Ridge, Olympic Lane, Olympic Extension, Olympic Ridge, Lower Olympic and Lower River Run.

The ski patrol and guest services departments will be asking skiers to respect these posted areas, Sibbach said.

In the past, speeding skiers and snowboarders have not posed a serious problem on Baldy, Sibbach said.

"We’ve taken tickets and passes for a couple of days, but usually nothing serious."

To date this ski season, Sibbach said that on-snow speeding has not been a problem. Without crowds, he said, the company tends to be a little more lax.
