County OKs airport plan

The Blaine County Commissioners signed two agreements Tuesday that moved development plans for the Friedman Memorial Airport one step closer to completion.

One action approved an acquisition for $4.3 million to buy 40 acres south of the airport to permit a shift in the runway.

That acreage was part of Spencer Eccles’ Flying Hat Ranch. It will allow for a runway relocation of 350 feet to the south and for all buildings on the east side to be moved to the southwest corner of the airfield.

The second board action allowed for acceptance of a $12 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration, which will fund part of the three-year, $15-million airport development project.

Airport officials have said the changes will not increase capabilities of the airport to handle big jets or more traffic.

The board was required to sign the agreements as one of two political subdivisions sponsoring the project,

Blaine County Commissioner Len Harlig said the Hailey City Council—the other sponsor--is expected to sign the same agreements in the near future, finalizing the project.
