Governor’s Cup Golf takes its 24th tour

Elkhorn, Sun Valley and Gov. Batt host tournament


The Sun Valley and Elkhorn golf courses staged the 24th annual Governor’s Cup golf tournament Sept. 11-13.

Hosted by Idaho Gov. Phil Batt, the tournament helps provide Idaho students with scholarships to obtain vocational/technical educations at Idaho colleges and universities.

Crystal vases and silver trays were prizes for many of the top golfers. Here are some of the winners:

Governor’s Flight (gross): 1—Jon Van Wyk 147 (in a playoff). 2—Mike Sadley 147. 3—Jim Crawford 149. (Net): 1—Dennis Jackson 132. 2—Dick Stanton 139. 3—Joel Hickman 140.

Van Wyk won a two-night stay at a WestCoast hotel in San Francisco, Portland or Seattle, donated by The Grove Hotel in Boise. Low net winner Jackson won three ski passes from Sun Valley Company.

Elkhorn Flight (gross): 1—Skip Worthan 160. 2—Scott Cifrese 165. 3—John Stowell 171. (Net): 1—Dana Christensen 123. 2—Marvin Aslett 135. 3—Bob Hoffman 137.

Worthan won a fly fishing outfit donated by David Growe of 3M Co. Low net winner Christensen won a Precept golf bag donated by Stoney Brown of Crane Creek Golf Shop.

Sun Valley Flight (gross): 1—Mike Cusack 174. 2—Don Aardema 182. 3—Bob Payne 188. (Net): 1—Kurt Standley 136. 2—Steve Price 139. 3—Jack Van Beek 141.

Cusack won a fly fishing outfit donated by David Growe of 3M Co. Low net winner Standley won a Precept golf bag donated by Stoney Brown of Crane Creek Golf Shop.

Governor’s Flight, women (gross): 1—Joy Aslett 177. 2—Donna Dillon 214. 3—Sharyl Jackson 221. (Net): 1—Kathy Matson 144. 2—Laurel Hall 149. 3—Diane Van Beek 155.

Aslett won a gift basket from Camille Beckman and a lesson with Hillcrest Golf Course (Boise) pro Jerry Breaux. Low net winner Matson won a lacquer desk clock donated by Western Trophy of Boise.

Sun Valley Flight, women (gross): 1—Betty Huff 223. 2—Torc Gwartney 235. 3—Sally Hoffman 244. (Net): 1—Christine Donnell 158. 2—Nancy Van Wyk 163. 3—Diane Crawford 169.

Huff won a gift basket from Bath & Body Works and a lesson with Hillcrest Golf Course pro Jerry Breaux. Low net winner Donnell won an umbrella donated by Sun Valley Golf Course pro Doyle Corbett.

Men’s scramble winners were Steve Rector, Jay Hawkins, Dale Martin and John Chatburn at 143. On the top women’s scramble team at 158 were Teresa Deshon, Lori Easley and Eleanor Whisenant.

The men’s best ball winners at Elkhorn were Jon Van Wyk, Skip Worthan, Dana Christensen and David Prior; and at Sun Valley were Don Jackson, Skip Worthan, Jon Stowell and Al Kasner.

Women’s best ball winners at Sun Valley were Joy Aslett, Diane Van Beek, Diane Crawford and Nancy Van Wyk; and at Elkhorn were Evelyn Aardema, Diane Van Beek, Laurel Hall and Joy Aslett.

Long drive winners were Gordon Wilcox, Jim Crawford, Jon Van Wyk, Gerald Hunter and David Brower. Joy Aslett won women’s long drive.

Closest-to-the-pin winners were Marv Aslett, Gene Mansfield, Tom Sorge, Kirk Sullivan, Marc Johnson, Al Kasner, Scott Cifrese, Christine Donnell and Zola McMurray.
