Wagon Days 1998!


A record number of entries participated in this year’s Wagon Days Parade, held Saturday, Sept. 5 in Ketchum. And an estimated 15,000 spectators filled Ketchum’s streets to watch the bigger-than-ever Wagon Days parade.

Over 100 parade entries traveled to Ketchum for the annual Wagon Days Celebration, which highlights the largest non-motorized parade in the West, according to the Sun Valley/Ketchum Chamber of Commerce, parade organizer.

With seven marching bands, numerous wagons, carriages, riding clubs and more from all over the state of Idaho and the Northwest, there were nearly 1,000 participants in the parade. Entries were judged in various categories, and here is a list of the parade winners:

"BEST OF SHOW": 1—Independent Wagon Train from Salmon, with Doug Westfall of Salmon River Stage Lines driving a chuck wagon.

"PEOPLE’S CHOICE": 1—Whiskey Jacques of Ketchum, featuring entertainment by The Bobos and the human-powered "horses" from the Bald Mountain Rugby Football Club.

Other awards:

WAGONS: 1—Sagebrush Belgians/Tegernsee, with guests from Ketchum’s sister city in Germany riding in an antique restored hitch wagon driven by Lawrence and Joyce Edwards of Carey. 2—Vernon Miller & Family from Jerome, with a pair of blond Belgians pulling a Studebaker 5th wheel show wagon. 3—Magic Valley Mule Days Roundup/Pete Van DerMeulen of Hailey.

COACHES: 1—Independent Wagon Train driven by Doug Westfall from Salmon. 2—Rock Family Concord Stage, a hook-drawn Concord stagecoach owned by the Rock family from Mercer Island, Wa. and driven by Jim Barton of Carey. 3—Wells Fargo Stagecoach, driven by Mike Wickfield.

CARRIAGES: 1—Grand Marshal’s Carriage presented by the Paula Knickerbocker Kremer Foundation of Sandpoint honoring 77-year-old Nyle Swainston of Richfield and pulled by two purebred Dutch Friesian horses. 2—Karl and Eileen Morris/Wagonette from Boise, an 1876 Victorian carriage driven by Daryl Spurgeon of Ontario, Ore. 3—Karl and Eileen Morris/Carriage, a 1901 French Char-a-Banc carriage driven by Karl Morris.

BUGGIES: 1—Karole Peterson Buggy from Meridian, a turn-of-the-century trap drawn by a pair of bay Morgans. 2—Jim Brooks from Twin Falls, his pair of matched black mules named Tom and Jerry pulling an original restored Studebakerbuggy. 3—Roscoe Comer’s Buggy Shop from Weiser, pulled by two standard-bred Pacers and driven by Comer.

RIDING CLUBS: 1—Eh-Capa Bareback Riders from Nampa, a precision drill team featuring kids ages 8-19, led by trainer Janice Meek. 2—Americanas from Rexburg, about 40 all-black horses with matching equipment and riders carrying American flags, plus standing girls called "Roman Riders." 3—Peruvian Paso Horses from Ketchum.

FLOATS: 1—Expedition Inspiration Fund from Ketchum, with breast cancer survivors from Blaine County and Boise. 2—Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley from Hailey, featuring children who are summer volunteers with their shelter dogs. 3—Joe Maccarillo All-Stars from Hailey, with music standards.

OPEN: 1—Independent Free Trappers from Ketchum, fur trappers like John Davies and Jim Hitson headed for the Rendezvous. 2—Jose Luis Heredia from Nampa, a native Mexican specializing in rope tricks to show his heritage. 3—Native American Traditional from Twin Falls, representing tribes of the Shoshone/Washo, Navajo and Apache nations.

CARTS: 1—Sagebrush Belgians from Carey, an Amish-built oak cart like those used in the late 1800s, provided by Lawrence Edwards of Sagebrush Belgians. 2—Carolyn Phillips of New Plymouth, driving a custom-made Meadowbrook cart made in Sparks, Nv. with seven-year-old gelding "Yankee Doodle Dandy" pulling the cart.

PACK STRINGS: 1—Clarence and Sharon Sparks of Wendell, a pack string of bay mules.

Rotary Duck Race

The "Great Wagon Days Duck Race" was a phenomenal success, according to the sponsoring Ketchum/Sun Valley Rotary Club.

Nearly 18,000 ducks were sold. Race proceeds benefited Rotary Club projects, The Bill Janss Activity Center and Blaine County Search and Rescue.

The race down the Big Wood River was held Sunday, Sept. 6 and the winners were announced Tuesday, Sept. 8.

Grand Prize: The trip to Hawaii was won by Felisa Vanoff of Sun Valley. It includes round-trip airfare for four persons with seven nights lodging in a condominium on the island of Kauai.

First Prize: The Pentium II 350 Mz computer including all the features was won by Glenn and Linda Hunter of Ketchum.

Second first prize: The trip to Mexico, including round-trip airfare for four with six nights lodging at a private Santiago villa owned by Jim and Karen Davies was won by Bill Cassell of Sun Valley.

Other prizes:

Golf package: Paul Stoops.

Tennis package: Harry Jones.

Tickets for Idaho Steelheads and Utah Jazz: Jerry Seiffert.

Fishing package: Chip Mayle.

Facial package: Eileen Tudell.

Ski package: Catherine Samway.

Dinner package: Sarah Benson.

Two season discount ski passes at Sun Valley: Pam Rudolph.

Home improvement package: Jim Harris.
