Ketchum P.O. boxes may become rent free

The U.S. Postal Service is researching whether to eliminate fees for mail boxes at the Ketchum Post Office.

Small boxes currently cost $12 per year.

For years, U.S. Postal Service policy was to deliver mail to people living more than one-quarter mile from a post office; those who lived closer were required to pick up their mail at the post office, and to pay for a mail box there. But in April, U.S. Postmaster General Marvin Runyon announced that those people would receive their mail boxes free of rent.

In some communities, however, such as those in the Wood River Valley, nobody got home delivery. Due to snow plowing considerations, city ordinances have discouraged the erection of mail boxes in city rights of way.

"If the city is keeping us from providing the delivery service, then the boxes are no longer free," said John DiPeri, manager of marketing for the Postal Service’s Spokane district, which covers Idaho and western Washington.

According to Ketchum city administrator Jim Jaquet, anyone who wants to erect a mailbox along the street can do so after signing a right-of-way agreement. The agreements eliminate city liability and require the signer to remove the box if necessary.

DiPeri said he has requested copies of ordinances and city council minutes on the subject from the city of Ketchum.
