Wagon Days’ first-ever queen and princess last weekend glittered with crowns made by Jay Black, a 23-year-old Western silversmith from Buhl.

Black learned his craft in Nampa after finishing high school, thanks to an unusual graduation present from his parents—silversmithing lessons. What was initially a hobby has developed into a profession.

s9sil1.gif (9817 bytes)In addition to turning the heads of many locals and visitors who saw the crowns and belt buckles he created, Black’s budding five-year career has attracted attention in several other states, including Oregon, California and Montana.

s9sil3.gif (9350 bytes)"Especially now, a lot of his artistic ability is coming out," Black’s mother, Kay, said. "His father is an artist and he inherited his talent."

Western jewelry, spurs and round, decorative conchos compose most of his work. The Wagon Days queen and princess crowns were a new addition to his repertoire.
