Children at risk from heat

With near-record heat expected for Idaho this summer, the Mountain States Group Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Program is urging parents to "take time to take your child with you."

On a day when the mercury is hitting 85 to 90 degrees, a vehicle’s inside temperature can shoot up to 117 degrees within 20 minutes.

"There are no circumstances when it’s safe to leave a child in the car," said program director Kay Mascall. "With temperatures forecast to be over 100 degrees, it is imperative that parents understand that it is life threatening to do so."

A child left in hot temperatures can suffer brain damage or even death in 15 minutes.
