Brush fire blazes through ElkhornFirefighters battle a 25-acre blaze in Elkhorn Sunday. Erratic winds made fighting the blaze difficult. (Photos by Amy Elle) Some 75 firefighters battled a brush fire at the end of Grey Eagle Road in Elkhorn Sunday. The fire began at approximately 3 p.m., and firefighters were on the scene until 10 p.m., Sun Valley Fire Chief Jeff Carnes said. The fire, which was caused by the spontaneous combustion of a wet straw stack that was being used for erosion control, burned 25 acres of Sun Valley/Elkhorn open space, said Carnes. Erratic winds made fighting the blaze difficult, Carnes said. "Had the winds been to the south or southwest many homes would have been in danger," Carnes said. "Fortunately, the wind was to the north." Only one Elkhorn home was in any danger, Carnes said, that of Sun Valley Mayor Tom Praggastis. Sun Valley, Ketchum, Hailey, Wood River Rural, Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management fire crews were on the scene, Carnes said.
